CUSTOM FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING CELL FOR REMOTE CONTROL RACECAR
February 2018 - April 2018
Finished Product
Final product - manufactured with custom flexible manufacturing cell (FMC) and hand painted. This car won the class-wide remote control race on a custom built track.
Process Improvement
Time was shaved off of the manufacturing time by applying LEAN principles to the designs, CNC processes, industrial robot coding, etc.
Process Scheduling
Process Scheduling is a huge step in reducing waste and producing products efficiently and effectively. Balancing Work in Progress (WIP) and Throughput (TH) are vital to managing Finished Good Inventory (FGI).
Car Roof CAD
Designed to be securely fastened to the car body, hiding the wires. Milled by a CNC machine in the FMC.
Car Body CAD
The car body has several compartments to house the electronic components. The corners were kept rounded so that the milling process would be faster.
Flexible Manufacturing Cell
BU's FMC features a conveyor belt with mini pallets, CNC Mills, a CNC Lathe, a camera for image processing quality checks, and more.

Remote Control Electronic Components
A major design constraint for the car body was ensuring that the wires and motor fit properly and that the back wheel axle was able to turn to the desired degree.

Car Wheel CAD
Four wheels were CNC lathed in-line production and then press fit on to the car axel by an industrial robot.
